Alien invasive plants and wildlife are an ever-increasing threat to the biodiversity of the Everton Conservancy. Alien invasive species are those plants and animals that are not indigenous to South Africa, but have adapted to or are suited to the prevailing growing conditions so well that they are able to outcompete local plant or animal species. This means that wildlife found in the area suffers from a decrease in habitat quality. As alien invasive plants smother and displace the indigenous plants, many of these naturally occurring plant species no longer thrive in the conservancy, and become increasingly scarce. Non-indigenous wildlife also poses a threat as these exotic creatures often displace indigenous wildlife that may have a very narrow and specific requirement from their habitat. Unless every effort is made to remove alien invasive plant and animal species from the Everton Conservancy and surrounding natural areas, indigenous plant and animal species run a very real risk of becoming very rare or even extinct in this area.
Removal of alien invasive animal and plant species makes up the bulk of the physical work in the Everton Conservancy. Ongoing efforts are required to eradicate invasive species. Property owners in surrounding areas are urged to remove alien invasive plant species from their properties, as these spill over into the conservation areas.
Members of the Everton Conservancy committee are available to give advice to property owners on the removal of alien invasive plant species. A donation towards the maintenance of the Conservation area is requested for this service.
National Environmental Management : Biodiversity Act (NEMBA) Categories for alien invasive plant species:
1a High-priority emerging species requiring compulsory control. All breeding, growing, moving and selling banned
1b Widespread invasive species that must be controlled by a management programme
2 Invasive species controlled by area. Can be grown only under permit conditions in a demarcated area. All breeding, growing, moving, selling banned without a permit.
3 Ornamental and others species that are permitted on a property but may no longer be planted or sold.
