The Conservancy’s main focus is to conserve the biodiversity in the publically-owned, natural areas of Everton. It is involved in a broad range of activities:
1. We monitor the natural environment in Everton. We monitor wildlife in the area with camera traps. We have recorded a number of species, including Bushbuck, Grey Duiker, Blue Duiker, Bushpig, Bushbaby, Porcupine, Water mongoose, Genet, Caracal and Hyrax.
2. We work on the eradication of invasive alien plants within the municipal areas of Everton.
3. We educate residents on alien invasive clearance and the biodiversity of the area through social media and events.
4. We facilitate alien invasive clearance on residents’ properties through the use of our three trained staff.
5. We maintain the two parks in Everton – Eskotene grassland and Everton Park. These parks are primarily KwaZulu-Natal sandstone sourveld, which is an endangered subtropical grassland type.
6. We work on alien eradication and management of the former cemetery site where there is a large stand of endangered Stangeria cycads.
7. We monitor water quality in the Molweni and Iphithi rivers, taking action when necessary.
8. We work closely with other Conservancies in the Upper Highway area to ensure that developments take place within the structures of the environmental regulations and by-laws.
9. We develop and maintain hiking trails along the Molweni river.
10. We remove litter from roadsides in Everton.
